Who Is Playtech?

Playtech was founded back in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by a group of people from several industries, one of whom was Teddy Sagi, an Israeli-Cypriot businessman who now also owns London’s Camden Market. Sagi was the mind behind Playtech and he wanted to create casino software that was unique, revolutionary and groundbreaking. From 1999, the team at Playtech began to grow and they launched their first online casino platform in 2001.

Over the next several years the company began working on what would later become the iPoker Network. Launched in 2004, iPoker was a platform that grouped all of Playtech’s casino operators and poker sites together under one site, offering different poker games from multiple websites.

Throughout the early 2000s, Playtech launched several online slots including A Night Out, Party Line, Gold Rally, The Incredible Hulk, Pet Luck, The Sopranos, Triple Profits, Beach Life and many more. Then, in 2006, Playtech decided to take the company public in order to acquire smaller game studios and companies, following in the steps of fellow casino game providers. In March of the same year, Playtech began trading on the AIM market on the London Stock Exchange with a valuation of almost $950 million.

The following few months continued to be successful for Playtech and culminated in the firm launching its popular bingo service Bingo Broadway. However, it all came crashing down later in the year when President George Bush passed the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act which prohibited gambling. This forced most of Playtech’s operators to shut down and the company suffered a fall of 40% on the London Stock Exchange. However, this setback didn’t stop Playtech. While many companies began to reconsider whether they should continue in the online gambling industry, Playtech began buying them up.

Over the next few years, Playtech managed to buy bingo provider Virtue Fusion, Swedish game developer Quickspin, sportsbook supplier Geneity Limited, sports betting service BGT, Ash Gaming, Psiclone Games, Aristocrat Lotteries, YoYo Games and PokerStrategy. They were also awarded gambling licenses in other European countries and made partnerships with larger websites including William Hill, Gala Coral, Holland Casino and more.

During this time, Playtech managed to really make a name for itself by releasing huge slots like Gladiator, Pink Panther, Cops n Bandits, Halloween Fortune, White King and its Age of Gods Series. In addition, the firm’s licensed Marvel Comics slots made Playtech incredibly popular, but the firm’s agreement with Marvel Comics expired in March 2017. This led Playtech to form a new agreement with Warner Bros. to create and develop slots based on DC Comics films such as Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad and more.

They’re still releasing games to this day and the firm’s most recent slots include Aquaman, Age of the Gods: Mighty Midas, Galactic Streak, Big Bear and Coin! Coin! Coin! They’re expected to continue releasing games throughout 2019 and fans of the firm can’t wait to see what they’ve been working on.

Playtech’s Achievements

Since the company was founded, Playtech has proven itself as a leading software provider. It’s won numerous awards over this time, including four 2013’s EGR B2B Awards, the Best Online Bingo Software award at the 2014 WhichBingo Awards, Supplier of the Year at the 2014 eGR Italy Awards, the Gaming Excellence Award at the 2018 Migea Malta iGaming Awards and several more accolades.

Most recently Playtech has been in the news for scooping up two awards for Best Technology and Best Live Studio at the Casino Life and Business Awards in 2019. Meanwhile, Playtech’s shares have reached their highest ever level! What could be better?

Game Selection

We’ve already touched on some of Playtech’s most famous games including their Age of Gods, Marvel and DC Comics series, but they’ve made much more than just that. Playtech is also well-known for its collection of jackpot games which are all linked to a progressive jackpot network. Most of Playtech’s Marvel slots (Which are no longer available to play since the licensing agreement has expired) and all of their DC-based and Age of Gods-themed slots are featured on the network, giving you a chance to win huge sums of money. Other jackpot games created by Playtech include Beach Life, Gladiator, Cinerama and many more.

Table Games

What a lot of people don’t realise about Playtech is that the company has also made several table casino games. Over the years, Playtech has released games including Perfect Blackjack, 1,000 Diamond Bet Roulette, Blackjack Super 21, Tequila Poker, Sic Bo, Baccarat, American Roulette, Blackjack, Wild Viking, Newar Roulette, Stravaganza, Blackjack Pro and other variations.

Through Virtue Fusion, Playtech offers a huge variety of bingo games including 90, 80 and 75-ball bingo as well as bingo games themed after popular reality television shows such as X-Factor and Deal or no Deal. In addition, you’ll also find slots based on themes from other slots such as Rainbow Riches, The Age of Gods and several others.

These games feature impressive graphics as well as some incredibly realistic sounds. As a provider, Playtech has created virtual basketball, virtual cycle racing, virtual racing, virtual speedway, virtual Greyhound racing, virtual football and virtual tennis.

As we’ve mentioned, Playtech owns the iPoker Network which hosts games from several different websites. Well, the iPoker Network also runs poker tournaments including Wild Twister, Twister, Sit and Go, Six Plus Hold’em and Cash. However, these are less popular than Playtech’s various slot games.

In addition, Origins has worked with Warner Bros. to develop Playtech’s DC Comics slot games.

Psiclone Games

Another subsidiary of Playtech, Psiclone Games was originally founded in 2007 in the UK but was acquired by Playtech in 2014. However, they have developed Playtech’s Fairground Fortunes series which has proven to be incredibly successful.

Arguably the most well-known studio owned by Playtech. Quickspin is a Swedish game studio that was acquired by Playtech in 2016. It’s dedicated to creating unique games that provide players with fun and exciting experiences. The firm is known for its string of popular games including Hidden Valley, Dwarfs Gone Wild, Mighty Arthur, Sticky Bandits, Big Bad Wolf, Royal Frog, Sinbad, Sugar Trail and so many more.

An Austrian game studio which was founded back in 2011. Playtech BGT Sports (PBS)

Playtech BGT Sports (PBS) is the final Playtech subsidiary we’re going to be discussing. PBS is a company that was created when Playtech bought Best Gaming Technology GmBH in 2016 and merged it with its own sports betting services. The firm provides bookmakers with betting software and technology and, as of today, powers almost 30,000 betting terminals for big-name operators including Ladbrokes and Paddy Power.

Playtech’s Future

Playtech is expected to continue releasing games throughout 2019 and beyond. It’s thought that Playtech will continue acquiring smaller studios to help them develop and release exciting new content. Meanwhile, the firm has been busy breaking into brand new markets throughout Europe, so we’re expecting to see a lot more of that.

The firm is making an appearance at ICE 2019 at the ExCeL centre in London in February where they’re expected to show off new games, software and platforms. We can’t wait to see what they’ve been working on and what fun games we’ll get later this year.

It’s easy to see why Playtech is such a well-known and popular game provider. They’ve worked hard to prove themselves and continue to release unique and exciting slots, particularly games themed on licensed products such as films and television shows. Playtech has come a long way from their early days and they’re only expected to continue growing over the next few years. We can’t wait to see what comes next.
